Carrier Oils are vegetable oils (typically extracted via expeller or cold pressed from the seeds, nuts, or kernels of plants). Most Carrier Oils -- also known as non-volatile “Fixed Oils” -- are unscented or naturally lightly-scented, non-toxic, and non-irritating oils. They are commonly used to “carry” essential oils, which if applied undiluted may irritate the skin. The general rule of thumb is to use a 1% to 3% dilution of essential oil in a carrier oil.
While essential oils add a desired, pleasing scent – and some add cleansing and antiseptic qualities -- carrier oils nourish the skin and hair. They add vitamins and fatty acids to topical skin and hair products – and importantly, they dilute the possibly irritating effects of undiluted essential oils on the skin.
